I live in a place with four seasons and I have sensitive, acne-prone, combination skin. Tweaking my routine is essential to maintain the fragile ecosystem that is my skin and without careful maintenance my skin is likely to erupt with acne breakouts.
Currently, my skin is in a good place with the cold, winter weather and upon reflection, I have to give due credit to adjusting my skincare routine to accommodate the effects from colder temperatures. With spring just around the corner, I will yet again alter my skincare routine to adapt to the warmer weather.
For starters, in the winter, I use a fragrance-free gel moisturizer every evening and once a week I apply a retinoid Adapalene more specifically, to help not only with the anti-aging process, but also to keep my acne at bay and increase the skin cell turnover rate to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. In the morning, I use a mineral sunscreen – see my sunscreen reviews post to find out which is my favorite and other product comparisons!
In the summer, I have learned to skip moisturizer altogether since the humidity along with any moisturizer is just too much for my skin and my acne flares up. I also increase the usage of retinoid to twice a week. I have tried to maintain the frequency of retinoid in the winter, but my skin told me to pump the brakes with the eruption of dry, scaly patches along my normal to dry areas.
It has been quite an ordeal to get to a state where my acne has for the most part faded to the background and I hope that with the upcoming warmer weather I can maintain the balance with the tricks I learned trying to root out the causes of my prior summer acne flare ups. I wish that someone had told me about altering skincare routines based on the weather; it could have cut down the time spent dealing with the stress of repeated acne outbreaks despite using the same routine whichI had no problems with many months before!
