1. Change Your Pillowcases Often

Every time you go to sleep, you will be shifting positions all through the night. Dead skin cells are shed mixing with dust, dirt, and oils leaving residue on your pillowcase. If you’re not changing your pillowcases frequently (I refresh mine daily), then that build up accumulates while becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. And then this mixture transfers onto your face and it can exacerbate acne-prone skin. While you are at it, consider changing out your sheets and whether it is time to get new pillows!
2. Wash Your Hands

Use your best judgement on this of course. For me, I wash my hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds when I come back home or when I have been touching many surfaces throughout the day and want to apply skincare to my face. As a bonus, you may notice that the number of times you get a cold reduces dramatically! It’s one of those habits that is obvious when pointed out, but gets lost in the mix of priorities of everyday life.
3. Improve Your Gut Health

It is said that your stomach is your 3rd face. There’s so much research touting the benefits of a diverse gut microbiome and how it affects mood, sleep, digestion, and in the case of this post, your acne. Improving your gut involves consuming a diverse diet – eating the rainbow is the phrase that gets often used. Think fruits, vegetables, fibers, and whole foods. To further amp up your gut health, consider taking probiotics to introduce good strains of bacteria to your gut.
4. Keep it Minimal

I cannot emphasize this enough. It is very easy and I know from personal experience to try every skincare product out there that is advertised to fix acne, but less is seriously more. Piling on product after product in the hopes that it will get rid of your acne can backfire and cause your acne to get worse and even cause more breakouts. Keep it simple, limiting to sunscreen, moisturizer, and a face wash to start with and go from there. Read more about my acne journey here for more tips and insights!
5. Base Your Skincare on the Weather

Unless you live in a place where the weather is pretty much the same year round, pay attention to this one. For example, in the winter, my skin gets drier which necessitates the need to apply a moisturizer in the evening. However, the summers here are humid which results in me ditching moisturizer altogether. Sometimes tried-and-true products only work well in certain conditions and weather is definitely one of those factors. Get more details about this and my weather-based routine here!
