Bumpin: Book Review

I recommend this book to all people interested in learning about pregnancy or are even remotely thinking in the future to have kids. Wealth is knowledge and having the insights of what to expect removes the shroud of mystery! Some takeaways:

  • Biological clock for women (35) and men (40)
  • Involution – process where the uterus shrinks from the size of a watermelon after birth to a smaller size
  • Uterine prolapse may require surgery
  • Roly poly out of the bed, do not engage your abs to avoid diastasis recti
  • Prepare beforehand the financial costs and insurance measures needed to have a child and raise them
  • Pelvic floor exercises are key
  • Molro reflexes – babies flail their arms around
    • Swaddle them so that they can have a more restful sleep. When they begin to roll gradually adjust them with one arm out and then eventually to no swaddling
  • Vaginal births may have less risk of a child developing asthma, SIDs, etc. than a c-section
  • C-section is an abdominal surgery
  • Have a car seat ready to take the baby home
  • Do Kegal exercises to reduce incontinence
  • Expect constipation after giving birth
  • Breastfeeding stimulation: pumping and manual stimulation
  • Babies have an APGAR test done after birth as well as get a K-shot and eye drops
  • European formulas may be better due to being organic (no detectable levels of pesticide), contain no corn syrup, and cows are grass fed and live on bio-dynamic farms
  • Donor milk may not be worth getting since it goes through a pasteurization process where it is heated to ~60 degrees Celsius removing vitamin C and fat and reducing levels of other vitamins
  • Stomach binding after birth is not scientifically proven but could aid in recovery and help the organs feel more in place
