KoolSol Mineral SPF50 Sunscreen Review

I finally finished up the MDSolarSciences untinted sunscreen and had this next up in the queue to use! I bought it based on a review video I saw where the application did not leave a shine to the skin unlike most untinted mineral sunscreens I’ve tried in the past. On my light-medium olive skintone, the Koolsol by Knours Ultra Light Invisible Mineral Sunscreen does not leave a white cast and it is very lightweight like advertised. Once blended in, there is a slight sheen but that quickly dissipates leaving a matte finish and it is velvet to the touch. No sticky residue!

The container itself is very travel friendly since it is under the 3.4oz TSA limit for liquids and it has a twist-snap closure that makes it extra secure and less likely to leak in a bag. Even better compared to other mineral sunscreens out there, the price ranks on the more affordable side. With SPF50 coverage, this sunscreen will filter out 98% of rays while SPF30 filters out 97% and SPF15 filters out 93%. Even better, it does not break me out and I have super sensitive, acne-prone skin!

The only gripe I have with it is the smell! To me, it smells like someone else’s stinky laundry and it is especially noticeable on first whiff while applying. After it is blended in, the smell is not noticeable, but I occasionally get whiffs of it throughout the day but nowhere near the initial potency straight out of the tube. Looking at the ingredients, I guess the goldenrod extract ingredient is the culprit. To be fair, I bought this and waited at least 6 months to use it so that could have affected the formulation. However, FDA OTC regulation requires that sunscreens maintain a 3-year efficacy and the tube I had was not expired. So proceed with caution when deciding to purchase! For what it is worth, I looked over reviews of this product after my first use of it and some reviewers had no issues with the smell while others mentioned that it was too much to handle. If it weren’t for this one offending issue, I would highly recommend this sunscreen!

Here are the key points summarized:

  • SPF 50
  • 10.087% non-nano zinc oxide
  • Not tinted (white colored lotion)
  • Blends out easily and leaves no sheen after dry down
  • Not water resistant
  • 1.69z is $25
  • Hard-shell squeeze tube packaging
  • Repurchased? No
  • May smell offensive to some
